EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR therapy is a powerful psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma.

No one knows how any form of psychotherapy changes the chemistry of the brain.  However, we do know that when a person is faced with life or death, their brain becomes overwhelmed and cannot effectively process the situation.  These traumatic memories get stuck in the more active part of the brain and not to proper memory storage.  These memories become "frozen in time," and when the memories are triggered, through sounds, smells, images or feelings, it can be as intense as if experiencing them for the first time.

The goal of EMDR therapy is to process those memories that are "stuck" so that they can be stored properly within the brain's memory systems, thereby, alleviating the memory's negative effects and reconnecting with more positive healthy ones.

I have witnessed the power of this therapy myself and I am very excited to share it with my clients.  It is another tool that we can utilize to help untangle the maladaptive wiring in your brain that has hijacked your day-to-day well being.  EMDR is very different than traditional Talk Therapy and requires commitment and consistency.  This will be discussed as part of our collaborative treatment planning goals.
